Communication Regarding Concerns

Novato High School trusts and supports the decisions of our coaches in regards to playing time, athlete playing position, and game play strategy.  If a student athlete or parent has a concern or grievance other than the above topics, please take the following steps in this order.

Do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a game, competition, contest or practice; this is a District and Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) Rule.  A 24-hour cool down period is expected by all associated with the athletic program.
Student-Athlete, Parent/Guardian,

Coach Communication Protocols

  • First Step→ Student athlete discusses concern with coach.  A coach is not to be contacted at home or approached within 24 hours of a game/contest.  If unresolved, go to Step 2 with documentation of first meeting/discussion.
  • Second Step →Parent and student schedule a meeting to discuss concern with the coach.  A coach is not to be contacted at home or approached within 24 hours of a game/contest.  If unresolved, go to Step 3 with documentation of first two meetings/discussions.
  • Third Step → Parent and student athlete may submit a grievance in writing to the Athletic Director.  A meeting may be scheduled with all parties.   If unresolved, go to Step 4 with documentation of first three meetings/discussions.
  • Final Step → Student-athlete and parent/guardian will make an appointment to meet with the coach, athletic director, and administrator in charge of athletics.
